I bought this beautiful linen fabric in Tasmania last time I was there, I also bought the hessian straps from a fave little shop called The Maker in Salamanca. Finally I have put this together and I love it, might have to make a few more of these, the pattern (from The LongThread) was easy and well designed. It is the perfect Tote !Peekaboo Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12866888600639028636noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3494617117856703646.post-26509100533077990502013-08-09T02:13:00.002-07:002013-08-09T02:13:38.666-07:00Catching upI have been very slack with blog updates of late however I do have a great excuse. I have had my head in my sewing machine. Busy with 5 quilts on the go, one for my Dad, one for the School Fete, one for Lucy, a Liberty & Linen one and a Star Quilt 'just for technique'.

I am also branching out and have made a cute bag and a hobby bag. A few weeks ago I had a weekend away with my best and we sewed our selves silly ! I am slightly addicted right now and would rather be sewing than working.
My niece turned 3 yesterday and she loves dolls. I found this gorgeous pattern online for a mermaid on Etsy from a little shop called Tuesday Mourning and made her a mermaid. Her tail is quilted and hair is felt. I really enjoyed making her and will attempt another one for Lucy.

If you are looking for her on Etsy, her name is Milly the Mermaid

Big progress on painting. Hubby has been very busy after work every night and most of the weekend.
The balustrading has required 4 coats. 2 undercoat and then two in the stinky enamel. The result is wonderful and the back half of our house looks so much bigger, fresher, cleaner and more welcoming. No more mis-matched timber. We are still yet to roll the walls (Antique White) and then there are doors, skirting boards and the stairs to sand and stain. Still a lot more to do but so far we are really happy with it.Peekaboo Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12866888600639028636noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3494617117856703646.post-4007182803625246192013-06-03T17:05:00.001-07:002013-06-03T17:06:12.603-07:00Fuel for Renovations

I woke up early on Sunday morning and decided that if we were going to really get our painting job underway we would need some fuel to renovate. Lucy and I whipped up some banana and walnut muffins and my Mum's Museli Slice. I have to say that they both seem to disappear I this house very quickly.

The latest inside job we are tackling is the timber work at the back of the house. The stairs lead up to a mezzanine floor and what is now Lucy's play room. We hope to one day convert it all into a really fantastic area for Lucy to sleep, play and eventually.. study.

First job, sand the entire lot, fill the cracks with timber putty and a heap of no more gaps. Then, undercoat the lot and paint the whole lot white. I will take lots more photos along the way as this is a mammoth task and will take a few weeks to complete. As my hubby said last night while I was painting and watching Revenge... we can just plug away at it.

Might need a truckload of Museli Slice.
It is finally finished. The gumdrops quilt was a labour of love, from selecting 400 scraps to sewing them all on, then quilting it myself. Lucy loves it and it is keeping her warm right now.
I am happy with result but do wish that I had made it a little bigger. I guess that is an excuse to make another one then.Peekaboo Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12866888600639028636noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3494617117856703646.post-41395722988904797952013-05-04T18:01:00.001-07:002013-05-04T18:01:03.028-07:00May Goal Setting

Today I swapped my sewing machine for a drill and I made a swing. A bit of timber, a few bits of rope and the right drill bit, half an hour later - ta da! a swing. I am very tempted to make a cute cushion to put on top of the seat.Peekaboo Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12866888600639028636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3494617117856703646.post-82292283657260881912013-04-19T01:57:00.001-07:002013-04-19T02:12:10.991-07:00Quiet Quilt Finished

I started this quilt at a Weekend Sewing Retreat last year and this week I finally finished it. I made a pact with myself not to start anything new until I had finished my half done quilts. I really love this quilt and have nicknamed it 'Quiet Quilt'. Perfect for evenings on the couch in winter.

I have hand stitched inside the middle squares and the rest of the quilt I have used the 'stitch in the ditch method' for quilting. I am not overly confident at machine quilting yet so this one was a good practice. I am happy with the way it has turned out.

I signed this one up on a Lovely Year of Finishes in January and I have only now finished it. I have finished others in between but neglecting my blogging.

One day I will make a log cabin quilt totally in Liberty !Peekaboo Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12866888600639028636noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3494617117856703646.post-3488966271961425942013-04-12T01:43:00.002-07:002013-04-12T01:43:17.206-07:00Liberty Quilt Finished

I have finally finished my Liberty Tana Lawn Quilt. It has taken a long time from when I bought the fabric 2 years ago. I had it professionally quilted and over the last few nights finished the binding. 8.8 metres of hand stitching, which I love but was glad to finish.

I love the texture, feel and warmth of this quilt. It is the biggest one I have made yet and it has only inspired me to make more Liberty Quilts.
400 gumdrops scraps, 800metres of cotton to stitch around each gumdrop and a whole lot of coffee went into creating the top for Lucy's new quilt. We had fun picking the scraps together and on my weekend retreat (a few weeks back) I put it all together. It is probably the most unsociable quilt I have ever made as I had to concentrate whilst appliqueing the gumdrops onto the background. Forget the wine for dinner too !

The pattern is from the gorgeous Sunday Morning Quilts book. I want to make nearly all the quilts in this book.

Now I just have to put it all together and work out a less time consuming way to quilt this one.
Tonight I am packing for my second Quilting Retreat in Toodjay with Claire and Jemima. I have decided to make the Gumdrops Quilt from the Sunday Morning Quilts book. I have cut out 400 gumdrops from fabric scraps that Lucy picked. She is very excited about having this quilt on her bed for winter time. A lot of stitching to do between now and then.
Last Sunday morning we packed our sunnies and sunscreen and headed down to Cottesloe for Sculptures by the Sea. It is fantastic for kids and it was warm enough for a swim in the Ocean.
I took a few snaps of my favourite sculptures, it was the brightly coloured ones that caught my eye this time, and Lucy's.
Oh I am very late for my Thursday. As it is Thursday tomorrow and I am only doing last Thursday's today !

The Question this week is:

Tell us about
your sewing friends. Have your fabric tastes changed by having friends who like
to sew? Do you like the same things or are you completely
opposite?

I have a few sewing friends in Perth. Lindy being my closest friend and sewing buddy. We like some of the same things but mostly we love quilting. We love going to quilting shops, spending nights together sewing, dreaming about winning lotto so we don't have to work and we can spend our days sewing, swapping blogs and web inspiration, pinning quilts we would like to make on Pinterest and did I mention dreaming?... We are different in the fabrics we like however we both have a love of 1930s fabrics. I prefer pretty florals (basically anything Liberty of London) and Lindy likes brighter fabrics. She likes black and white and modern fabrics whilst I wouldn't pick them up and go 'oooo... ahhh' like she does.

We have since gained a wonderful new friend that we met on a quilting weekend last October and we share a love of quilting and fabric. Madeleine has just been to London and bought a massive stash of Liberty fabric - we ooo'd and ahhh'd and I squealed when she gave me a belt buckle made of Liberty fabric as a pressie.

We adopted Reggie six months ago and have loved him from the day we picked him up. He has taken a little while to adapt to life in the city after being found in a rabbit trap but he has found his place in the world - hanging out with Lucy. She adores him and when he is not tearing around the house chasing imaginary mice he is snoozing on the rug in the living room. He is a very happy cat.

Having been full of a cold this week I have been looking for every opportunity to catch a 'quiet moment'. I decided rather than to machine quilt my 'Quiet Quilt' I would hand quilt it. It is much slower but very calming and I really think it adds that real handmade look to a quilt.

Lucy and I snuck in a quick quiet moment reading stories and sipping 'cinos' at our favourite coffee shop - Mrs S, this morning before school. A welcome quite moment after loads of tears due to Lucy slamming her finger in a door. Cino's fix everything said Lucy.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">and the question for Sew Thinky Thursday this week is:
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">What
is one regular thing you do for yourself to keep up your creative mind? Do you
go to a guild, out for coffee with a friend? Are there people / activities you
do regularly or as needed?

I had to think about this one and try and narrow it down because I keep my creative mind by thinking of ways to be creative, or think creatively in everything I do. I have a job that is most of the time quiet 'same same' so I like to think of ways to improve things and always searching for variety. I have begun to hang images around my desk of things that are nothing to do with work, they are often a good thing to stare at when I am doing something tedious.

For the crafty side of me, I have crafty friends who inspire me, I read crafty blogs, buy magazines and cut out the pages of things I love and file them 'for a rainy day' or on a day I am feeling 'less than creative'. I love to learn new things and have done many classes in felting, drawing and sewing.

I visit markets regularly and love to chat to the stall holders about their crafts. One of my favourite things to do is order a big coffee and my fave haunt and draw... draw what is in my head or what I feel like making. Also, a trip to my favourite fabric shops usually brings out the inspiration (and my wallet). Nothing like a good stash of new fabric to bring out my creative side.
I am not getting far with finishing my quiet quilt this month as I keep getting distracted with other projects and last minute gifts. Our lovely friends had their first baby boy last week so as I promised myself I would give as much hand made for gifts this year, I threw together this little play quilt for baby. My second attempt and machine quilting... I need a lot more practice.Peekaboo Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12866888600639028636noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3494617117856703646.post-85686254235520379172013-02-14T02:13:00.001-08:002013-02-14T02:13:11.927-08:00Happy Valentines Day

Monday is my favourite day of the week. I get to spend the morning having a nice breakfast with Lucy before she goes to school and then I get six blissful hours to myself doing what ever I please.

Today I met my bestie for Lunch and we did a spot of shopping and catching up on a bit of goss and generally having a good laugh about the situations we find ourselves in sometimes.

We met at Calico & Ivy (a favourite haunt) and sifted through piles of fabric thinking what we could make. Then onto lunch at Hubbles Yard in East Freo and a wander through the shops. I bought a stunning evening dress with the hope that one night I will get to wear it... must be a ball or wedding coming up soon... surely.

The question for Sew Thinky Thursday is: What is the Most Meaningful thing I have made..

It was hard to just pick one but I think the first quilt I made would have to be the one that comes to mind. I had my first quilting class at Thread Bearz in East Fremantle which does not exist anymore but the lovely lady (Jan Mullen from Stargazey) that taught me is still around creating fantastic things.

I look back at the fabrics I chose and have a giggle as they are so old fashioned and completely different to what I like now but I have fond memories of going to this class. It was on Wednesday nights and I hauled my heavy singer sewing machine up the street and couldn't wait to start.

My Mum helped me pin the quilt ready for hand quilting and I accidentally pinned it to the floor ! We still laugh about that.

It was also in a funny time in my life, being new to Perth and I hardly had any friends so quilting was a great comfort for me and suited me as I loved sewing anyway.

I still have this quilt and it is a favourite during the winter and when I am tucked up in bed with a flu.Peekaboo Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12866888600639028636noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3494617117856703646.post-15611095041264317432013-02-06T03:57:00.001-08:002013-02-06T03:57:40.355-08:00Autumn Leaves

The air was crisp this morning, a hint of Autumn in the air, even thought it is a few weeks away. It is my favourite time of year. Still warm enough during the day to swim but cool enough in the evenings that evoke sound sleep and a freshness in the air in the morning that is perfect with a hot cup of tea.
A few months ago there was a cute article in Mollie Makes with a tutorial to make these leaves. I am on a roll of finishes for 2013 and two nights ago I finally finished Lucy's couch quilt. It is a small quilt that I have quilted myself - a simple stitch in the ditch, which is a first for me. I am slowly getting the hang of machine quilting. The fabrcs are Kaffe off cuts from a friend. Lucy loves it and has already snuggled under it to watch a Barbie movie.Peekaboo Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12866888600639028636noreply@blogger.com1
